Our Food Warehouse

Every 10 days, Poverello House serves roughly 16,000 meals. That’s the equivalent of one meal for each person at a sold-out Save Mart Center concert. And we do it all with a warehouse and operations center that have seen much better days.

We can no longer postpone the need for a new warehouse...

Before Poverello House acquired the property at 412 F Street in Downtown Fresno, the structure was home to a used auto junk yard and salvaged parts.

Still, we considered ourselves blessed and grateful for the shelter and storage it provided for our donated food items. As good stewards of the financial resources given to us by our donors, we made it work.

But over the years, despite several quick-fixes, it has fallen into major disrepair: The wood frame is rotting. The roof leaks. Pest control is a challenge.

The lack of insulation and corrugated metal roof and siding creates temperature extremes that spoil our food products.

The layout is not conducive to efficiently moving and storing hundreds of pallets of food we manage in providing 1,600 meals a day.

And it poses a safety hazard to our staff.

One of the biggest obstacles to our daily operations is the warehouse lacks cold storage, forcing us to lease space offsite at a monthly cost. This creates additional workflow barriers to feeding the hungry and homeless.

We can no longer postpone the need for a new warehouse. Our plans to build it and a new operations center from the ground up—as well as to enhance our community housing area and expand our on-campus Super MAP Point at Pov—will cost $2.5 million.

Welcoming Change
From the Ground Up

When completed in October 2017, the Poverello House food warehouse and operations center and campus beautification project will feature:

  • Approximately 19,285 square feet of warehouse designed by the Valley’s leading architecture, construction, food processing and transportation experts.
  • An all-metal, completely insulated building to help extend the shelf life of food and other perishable products. It will be sealed to the elements and greatly enhance pest control efforts.
  • On-site commercial-grade refrigeration and freezer units in close proximity to the kitchen. This allows for safe food-handling practices, greater storage capacity of fresh foods and gained efficiencies and workflows direct to our kitchen instead of coordinating deliveries from leased cold storage in different parts of town.
  • More efficient rack and shelving units to maximize the height of the new structure.
  • A repair and maintenance area for Poverello House vehicles, as well as secured, covered parking for the Poverello House mobile café food truck.
  • Access and ample turnaround space for large tractor trailer deliveries and donations.
  • An Operations Center office space where staff can maintain inventory records and coordinate logistics, donations and deliveries.
  • An easily accessible public donation drop-off drive through circle that eliminates the need for donors to drive in the alley between the warehouse and Poverello House kitchen.
  • Enhanced perimeter fencing and security cameras; sidewalk, parking and street improvements.

  • Ample space and two-way flow for industry-standard forklifts. Cramped conditions of the existing structure can’t accommodate forklifts to move or stack pallets of food and supplies.
  • Green and more efficient features such as LED lighting, water-saving fixtures and new HVAC systems to provide a safe, comfortable, efficient and affordable work environment for our staff.
  • Consolidated Village and Community of Hope housing sheds with added lighting and permanent restrooms and showers to replace existing portable toilets.
  • Improved client access and a more permanent space for the Super MAP (Multi-agency Access Program) Point at Pov trailer where clients are linked to multiple behavioral, social and health services and housing programs.
